When you are considering a divorce, some things to start thinking about include
- Make a list of all bank accounts you know that you and your spouse have and/or any financial institutions that you are getting mail from.
- Start making a list of all items of value in your house.
- Include whether the items were obtained before or during marriage.
- Consider whether you need to prepare a will.
- Until the divorce is finalized your spouse inherits from you.
- Consider whether you need advanced directives.
- In the absence of them, your spouse may be able to make medical decisions for you.
- If you do not have these, your family may be prevented from obtaining information or participating in your medical decisions and/or getting your body if you pass away.
